Top 45 Blockchain Companies at Consensus Singapore 2018 – Part 5

On the 19th and 20th of September 2018, Consensus: Singapore 2018 was held at the Marina Bay Sands. OkayKrypto’s media team had the privilege of attending this event as part of the event’s media coverage and had the priceless opportunity of interviewing the heads of the best companies in the blockchain space.

Here are the interviews we conducted with 6 companies. Part 5.

1) VSC Ecosystem

OkayKrypto: What does your company do?

Harrison Chao (VSC Ecosystem): We are VSC Ecosystem and you can check out our website at VSCECO.com. Our Twitter handle is @VSCECO. We are a VC co-investment platform. If you’re familiar with equity crowd funding, it’s like equity crowd funding, but we have a lead anchor VC for each deal. The lead anchor VC I am talking about is not just any VC. It is one of the best performing VCs in Asia and it’s called Morningside. Morningside is the earliest and biggest investor in Xiaomi. Their first investment in Xiaomi had a Return On Investment of 866 times. So, what we want to do is open that up to more investors like retail investors, accredited investors and regular people. Our first project is called AI Chips Co. It will be listed on our platform in Q4 this year.

OkayKrypto: Who is your primary target market?

Harrison Chao (VSC Ecosystem): Our primary target market will eventually be retail investors. As you guys know, ICOs have been very popular over the past few years. This is because prior to this, people didn’t have an opportunity to invest in start-ups. Crowd funding was available but to be honest, it hasn’t picked up very much until recently. People are interested in ICOs so the market is ripe.

OkayKrypto: How does your company stand out from its competitors?

Harrison Chao (VSC Ecosystem): Technically speaking, we don’t really have any competitors. If you want to talk about equity crowd funding platforms, the reason why we stand out is because for every deal, we have a lead VC anchor investor. What this means is that the VC adds corporate governance to each deal. Their expertise and experience leads companies from seed to growth to maturity to exit. So with the VC, there is a much higher chance of a company being successful.

2) Maxonrow

OkayKrypto: What does your company do?

Luis Montalvan (Maxonrow): Maxonrow is a new blockchain company that is looking to establish an AML/KYC platform for governments and big corporations across different countries. Right now, sadly blockchain is a great technology and there are lots of investments going on but there aren’t many user-centred products. How do you create user-centered products? You focus on the people who create economic policies which are governments and big corporations. In a nutshell, that is what we do.

OkayKrypto: Who is your primary target market?

Luis Montalvan (Maxonrow): Well, we’re a global brand. Everybody says that everybody is their primary target market. That’s a rookie answer. Our main target audience is governments. So, the best way is to create products that governments will use in the Asia-Pacific. But, we’re working in all areas. It’s just that there is a different approach for Western markets and Eastern markets. For example, in the US, there are start-ups that go against government policies and that’s okay. That is the way their business is done. But in Asia, it’s better to work with governments. If not, you’re not really going to go anywhere.

OkayKrypto: How does your company stand out from its competitors?

Luis Montalvan (Maxonrow): First and foremost, we’re not doing an ICO. We are a privately funded company and we already have some strategies going on with governments and are creating products for them. So, that’s a big competitive advantage from day one. Secondly, we’re a global team. Our team is from the US, Europe and Latin America. Besides that, we are working very closely with our target audience. I think a problem that occurs the most in general is that people create really amazing things and then, nobody uses them. Because, they go for the amazing factor instead of focusing on the day-to-day lives of users. But what Maxonrow is trying to achieve is to create a blockchain that has real effects on owners of small, medium and big businesses and big corporations.

Luis Montalvan (Maxonrow):

Basically, we’re looking for investors that are interested not only in gaining money. Sadly, when a lot of people think about the blockchain market, they think of cryptocurrencies.

But, there are a lot of things going on on the side.

OkayKrypto: In the current market condition, what do you think is the most effective way to increase media visibility, reach out to investors and raise funds?

Luis Montalvan (Maxonrow): You need to know when to raise funds and for what. On the investment side, there is a great rate of adoption in the blockchain space. However, on the users side, blockchain is still in the early adoption phase. At this conference, you’re seeing everyone talking about blockchain. But this is basically the people who are passionate in building projects. From the customer’s point of view, let’s say your dad or my dad and I tell them that we’re going to be using blockchain for this. They are not going to be sure of what it is. So, our goal is to make blockchain likable, understandable, useful and basically designed for trust. Due to ICOs and scams, people are not really having trust in blockchain.

OkayKrypto: Which do you think has the most impact on your business now in terms of fund raising?

1) ICO Telegram Groups

2) Crypto Traditional Media

3) Private Investors Events

Luis Montalvan (Maxonrow): For our business, it’s definitely the private investors events. Right now, we are trying to establish ourselves. This is a pretty new project, but it’s borne out of two really well established blockchain businesses in the Asia-Pacific region. And what we’re basically trying to do is reach out to our target audience. For different crypto companies, it will be a good idea to attend events that are more targetted at investors.

3) ONO Social

OkayKrypto: What does your company do?

Bashir Modanov (ONO Social): We are a social network based on the blockchain. It is similar to Twitter and Facebook, but it’s more of a mix between the two. As it’s based on the blockchain, all the users’ data will be safe because it will never be sold. Like Facebook and Twitter, people can always post good content that gets a lot of engagement on the company’s platform but instead, they will be rewarded with more than just likes, retweets and shares because we value the effort users put in to produce great content. We are trying to provide users with more benefits as they are helping companies to get more users onto their platform and to stay engaged on such platforms. These rewards will be in the form of our tokens which can be used to exchange for fiat.

OkayKrypto: Who is your primary target market?

Bashir Modanov (ONO Social): In the beginning, it was just the US audience. But right now, it’s worldwide. Currently, we have more than 3 million users worldwide. 75% came from the Chinese market and the other 25% are based all over the world.

OkayKrypto: How does your company stand out from its competitors?

Bashir Modanov (ONO Social): Well, it’s tough especially when you have such a big competitor like Facebook. But people right now are seeing what’s happening with big companies who are selling their users’ data. Our unique benefit that attracts people to use our platform is the rewards system that users can benefit from.

OkayKrypto: In the current market condition, what do you think is the most effective way to increase media visibility, reach out to investors and raise funds?

Bashir Modanov (ONO Social): We are pushing hard on the PR side because our CEO is a woman and she is 23 years old. People really want to see women in the blockchain space. A Forbes article focusing on our CEO was just printed by Forbes Asia.

OkayKrypto: Which do you think has the most impact on your business now in terms of fund raising?

1)  ICO Telegram Groups

2) Crypto Traditional Media

3) Private Investors Events

Bashir Modanov (ONO Social): To be honest, all of them are very important. Telegram groups were very popular a couple of months ago, but right now the market is getting down and so the popularity of these groups are also going down which is not very stable. What I would say is very stable all the time would be the private investors events. Because you get to meet people and talk to them face-to-face all the time. That’s a big benefit. The second most impactful thing would be the media because people need to read and see your content. Because the media never writes wrong things and are always proving things.

4) Shift

OkayKrypto: What does your company do?

Ian McAfee (Shift): We set up cryptocurrency exchanges and we have a software solution such that our clients can come to us and become their own cryptocurrency exchange very quickly.

OkayKrypto: Who is your primary target market?

Ian McAfee (Shift): Our primary target market is anyone who wants to be a part of the growth in the cryptocurrency industry by getting into the exchange business. That could be an entrepreneur or that could be a large financial institution that hasn’t added crypto onto their platform yet.

OkayKrypto: How does your company stand out from its competitors?

Ian McAfee (Shift): We’ve been in the financial services market for nine years so it’s a little bit different than a lot of companies in the crypto space. We came from the Foreign Exchange (FX) space, so we’re very familiar with electronic trading. That background really helps us stand out in this market.

OkayKrypto: In the current market condition, what do you think is the most effective way to increase media visibility, reach out to investors and raise funds?

Ian McAfee (Shift): Social media is becoming more and more a part of the industry. So, you have to come up with good content, really explain to people what blockchain is all about and what this industry is all about. There’s still a lot of knowledge that needs to be filtered down to the people. So, I think putting out good content is one of the best ways to do that.

OkayKrypto: Which do you think has the most impact on your business now in terms of fund raising?

1) ICO Telegram Groups

2) Crypto Traditional Media

3) Private Investors Events

Ian McAfee (Shift): Events are really good for us because people can meet us face-to-face. They’re with us or giving us their money to run a new business so there’s a trust factor you get by meeting somebody and seeing that they’re real. So, I think that’s probably the best one for us.

5) Stealth

OkayKrypto: What does your company do?

Tito Vecchione (Stealth): We are a privacy coin. So, we specialise in private transactions and the value transfer of cryptocurrencies. We are in the blockchain space and we started out in 2014. This was kind of our hobby. We thought that there’s a really high value for privacy in your life in terms of transactions and consumer data. Our CEO, who is a Professor at the University of Colorado, forked off the Bitcoin chain and started Stealth as a Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism. There was no ICO. He had a little pre-mining period where he collected some Stealth to hold onto as a debt fund. And then, he opened it up for mining. Since then (2015 or 2016), we got listed on Bittrex and a couple of other exchanges. People have been trading it since. And then, development kind of went dormant. Before that, he had changed it to a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. This year, we decided to reboot the development. Our CEO has been putting in effort into pushing the brand and also delving into technology. And one thing that we are doing now is Quantum PoS. This is a new consensus mechanism that will allow for extremely fast private transactions in the private coin realm which are coins like Monero, Zcash, Zcoin and Stealth. Stealth aims to be the fastest coin out of all of them and solves for scalability as well. As more people use and trade Stealth, the performance does not get affected.

OkayKrypto: Who is your primary target market?

Tito Vecchione (Stealth): Right now, we’re mainly focusing on value transfer. So, I think that anybody who’s interested in trading cryptocurrencies and who really values keeping their information and their transactional data private, would see value in here. I think that the value of privacy coins has started to become more evident now. In the past, it had kind of an illicit feel to it. Like, “Why do you need a private transaction – what are you trying to hide?” But I think now, with the wider use of trading cryptocurrencies, people know that their activity can be monitored and there is a value in keeping that private.

OkayKrypto: How does your company stand out from its competitors?

Tito Vecchione (Stealth): We aim to be faster and private. And, we are not an ICO. So, partnering with other more traditional institutions financially is much easier. Once our Quantum Proof-of-Stake (QPoS) has been implemented, we aim to have the fastest transactions.

OkayKrypto: In the current market condition, what do you think is the most effective way to increase media visibility, reach out to investors and raise funds?

Tito Vecchione (Stealth): Well, I’ve never been into ICOs or attracting investors. But, I think that one main thing is to designate a use case. I think that really resonates well with people. Finding problems that you can solve with your technology attracts investors and makes people generally interested in the value of your project. To increase media visibility, generate a lot of content and make it educational and interesting. Try to explain it to people in the easiest way to understand. Use the ELI5 – Explain it to me Like I’m 5 years old. If you can do that, I think you’re on to something. There’s a lot of improvement in terms of educational content that’s out there about crypto. I think that meeting face to face with folks is important as well.

OkayKrypto: Which do you think has the most impact on your business now in terms of fund raising?

1) ICO Telegram Groups

2) Crypto Traditional Media

3) Private Investors Events

Tito Vecchione (Stealth) : I think Telegram groups kind of get the ball rolling. If you have a really robust group, you can direct people, meet new people and the word spreads really quickly. However, with a giant Telegram group, you have to turn the notifications off because it will drive you insane. So, you have to know how to manage it.

6)Peatio eXchange Network

OkayKrypto: What does your company do?

Cloris Guo (Peatio eXchange Network) : We are Peatio eXchange Network. Basically, we are not an exchange. And, we are trying to build our network to help our clients who are exchanges. So, we know a lot of people in this space who have these resources and have acquired some licenses. But, they do not have the technical support to launch their exchanges because it is much complicated than how it is in the traditional market. Our team is very experienced in this market. So, we use our technology to help our clients to launch their crypto-crypto and crypto-fiat exchanges.

OkayKrypto: Who is your primary target market?

Cloris Guo (Peatio eXchange Network): Actually, our target market is global. Basically, we already have several clients from America, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia. So, it is quite diversified. Blockchain is very global and that’s why our clients are global as well.

OkayKrypto: How does your company stand out from its competitors?

Cloris Guo (Peatio eXchange Network): There are two things that have made us stand out since the day we started. The first is compliance. It is very rare for a blockchain company to have a compliance team since their inception. We are one of very few companies in the world to have a very dedicated compliance team who has worked in traditional financial markets for decades and have carried that experience over. I used to be a lawyer working in a law firm for 10 years and so, we care about law and compliance. Secondly, our team is not just a technical team. Our founder has been in the crypto world for 5 years and has extensive experience in operations in an exchange. We leverage on our expertise, knowledge and commercial networking to promote a very solid blockchain community service to our clients.

OkayKrypto: In the current market condition, what do you think is the most effective way to increase media visibility, reach out to investors and raise funds?

Cloris Guo (Peatio eXchange Network): I would say that there is one thing that never changes and that is to be focused on your products. So, I think for those people who want to develop their own exchanges or who want to develop ICO projects, they should focus on what they have been doing. I think VCs and crypto funds will definitely pursue you if you are doing a great job.

OkayKrypto: Which do you think has the most impact on your business now in terms of fund raising?

1) ICO Telegram Groups

2) Crypto Traditional Media

3) Private Investors Events

Cloris Guo (Peatio eXchange Network): I would say private investors events and crypto traditional media. For private investors events, there will be better exposure to the investors you want to engage with. Not every investor is right for you. You will also be in the position to pick the right investor who can really go along with your plans. These events give you more time and space to discuss about the business you are doing. Investors can also understand more about you. For crypto traditional media, it is good because it will attract a lot of experts who are focusing on blockchain, the technical aspects of it and ventures. This can give very focused and centralised connections.
